Comfort is a relationship between the sofa, the sitter and the activity. A deep, soft sofa can be excellent for lounging and frustrating for upright conversation. The most useful evaluation separates posture, pressure relief and ease of getting up.

Start with posture

Sit with your back against the cushion and notice whether your feet rest naturally. A seat that is too deep may require a lumbar pillow; one that is too shallow can feel perching. Seat height and cushion compression together determine knee position.

Read the back angle

An upright back supports conversation and reading. A reclined back encourages lounging but can make a laptop or meal awkward. Loose cushions change the effective angle, so test them in the arrangement you will use at home.

Understand cushion character

Foam generally restores shape with less daily attention. Fiber and feather wraps add surface softness but usually need rotation and fluffing. Density, layer construction and the support beneath the cushion matter more than a single fill label.

Test more than the first impression

Spend several minutes in your normal positions, including the corner and center seat. Sit beside another person. Check the front rail under your thighs and whether the back cushions migrate. Immediate softness is not the same as sustained support.

Choose for the household

List who uses the sofa, how they sit and which activities dominate. A mixed household may benefit from moderate depth plus movable back cushions rather than an extreme seat designed for one posture.
