Standard Sofa Sizes Explained
Understand sofa width, depth, height and seat measurements without treating broad category labels as exact standards.

Two products with the same label can occupy very different footprints. Work from the dimension drawing, then test that exact outline in your room.
The measurements that matter
Overall width tells you how much wall the sofa claims. Overall depth controls the floor footprint. Overall height matters near windows and shelving. Seat width, depth and height describe the usable sitting area, while arm width and back-cushion thickness explain where the rest of the footprint goes.
Why category names vary
Manufacturers define two-seat and three-seat sofas differently. A compact sofa with narrow arms can offer more usable seating than a wider design with oversized arms. Sleeper mechanisms, reclining clearances and loose back cushions also change the space a sofa needs in use.
Map the real footprint
Mark the listed width and overall depth with low-tack painter’s tape. Add the coffee table and main walkway. Leave the outline down long enough to walk around it during an ordinary evening; a plan that works only when everyone stands still is not a useful plan.
Include delivery dimensions
Ask for packaged dimensions and the size of the largest non-removable piece. Measure door openings, hall turns, stair landings and elevators. Removable legs can help, but never assume arms or backs detach unless the seller confirms it.
A reliable final check
Record overall width, overall depth, overall height, seat depth, seat height and the tightest delivery opening in one note. Comparing those numbers across options is more useful than comparing labels such as compact or oversized.
