How to Measure a Room and Doorways Before Buying a Sofa

Map the final footprint
Record the sofa’s width, overall depth, and height. Use painter’s tape to mark the footprint on the floor. Add the depth of any recliner extension, pull-out bed, or movable chaise. Place temporary objects where side tables and the coffee table will sit so the plan reflects real use.
Allow room for the main walking route. A measurement that leaves only a thin passage may create daily frustration even though the sofa does not touch another object.
Measure every opening
Measure the clear width and height of the entrance door with the door open. Include handles, closers, trim, radiators, and other obstacles that reduce the usable opening. Continue through interior doors and narrow halls.
For elevators, measure the door opening as well as the cabin’s width, depth, and diagonal. For stairs, note the width, landing depth, ceiling height, railings, and the tightest turn.
Understand packaging and removable parts
Ask for packaged dimensions, not only assembled dimensions. Many sofas allow legs, arms, backs, or modules to be removed, but this varies. A modular sofa can simplify delivery because each unit travels separately.
Do not assume delivery teams will dismantle railings, doors, or the product. Confirm the service terms before ordering.
Photograph the route
A simple photo sequence from the building entrance to the final room can help a retailer or delivery team identify problems. Include a tape measure in the image when a tight dimension is important.
Keep a final checklist
Before paying, verify the room footprint, the tightest opening, the narrowest turn, elevator limits, stair geometry, packaged dimensions, removable components, and the retailer’s failed-delivery policy. This takes less time than resolving a sofa that cannot enter the home.
