A sagging seat can come from the cushion insert, the cover, the support beneath it or the frame. Diagnose the layer before adding plywood or buying replacement foam; a shortcut can hide a structural problem or make the seat uncomfortably firm.

Rotate and compare

Swap loose cushions between positions and reverse them if the design permits. If the dip follows the cushion, the insert or cover is the likely cause. If it stays in one seat, inspect the suspension and frame.

Restore loose fills

Feather and fiber cushions need air redistributed through the channels. Plump from several sides and rotate regularly. If fill has permanently migrated or broken down, a specialist can assess topping up or rebuilding the insert.

Assess foam inserts

Foam gradually softens. A new insert should match the cover dimensions, intended firmness and edge profile. Overstuffing strains seams and changes seat height, so use an upholstery supplier rather than guessing from a generic slab.

Inspect support safely

Remove cushions and look for displaced webbing, broken springs, loose clips or cracked rails without dismantling the frame. Stop using a seat with a structural fault and consult the manufacturer or an upholsterer.

Slow uneven wear

Rotate cushions on a schedule, vacuum grit from seams and avoid always sitting in one position. Keep zippers aligned and do not wash covers unless the care label permits it.
