Solid wood and hardwood
Kiln-dried hardwood is valued for dimensional stability and fastener holding, but species and moisture control matter. Inspect whether major rails feel rigid and whether high-load joints use blocks, dowels or other reinforcement.
Engineered wood
Plywood can be strong and stable when it uses sufficient layers and suitable thickness. Low-density sheet material is less reassuring at stressed joints. Ask where each material is used instead of judging the whole frame from one label.
Metal frames
Steel or aluminum can support slim or modular forms. Weld quality, corrosion protection, connector design and replaceable hardware shape durability. A rigid metal frame can still feel poor if the suspension or cushions are mismatched.
Inspect the whole system
The frame, suspension, legs and connectors work together. Rock the sofa gently, sit in several positions and listen for movement. For modular designs, examine how sections align and resist drifting.
Questions worth asking
Request a frame diagram, material list, warranty scope and information about replaceable legs, connectors and cushions. Specific answers are more useful than broad claims about heirloom quality.
