Find the cleaning instructions
Look under the cushions or frame for the upholstery code and manufacturer guidance. Common letter codes indicate whether water-based products, solvents, either type, or vacuum-only care is recommended. Treat the label as the starting point, not an invitation to use the strongest compatible cleaner.
Remove dry debris first
Vacuum with a clean upholstery attachment. Work along seams, under cushions, and around piping. Removing dust, crumbs, and hair prevents them from turning into residue when moisture is introduced.
Blot fresh spills
Use a clean absorbent cloth and press gently. Do not scrub, which can spread the spill or distort the surface. Work from the outside of the mark toward the center.
Test before cleaning a visible area
Apply a small amount of the intended method to a hidden section. Let it dry completely before checking for color transfer, rings, stiffness, or texture change. A wet test can appear successful and still dry unevenly.
Use controlled moisture
When water-based cleaning is permitted, use the minimum necessary moisture. Apply product to the cloth rather than soaking the sofa. Blot and lift instead of saturating the cushion. Keep the room ventilated and allow every layer to dry before use.
Know when to stop
Large stains, unknown substances, delicate fibers, strong odors from inside the cushion, and overall discoloration are reasonable reasons to call a professional upholstery cleaner. Repeated home treatment can make a stain harder to remove.
After cleaning, rotate and fluff loose cushions. Routine vacuuming and quick spill response usually matter more than frequent deep cleaning.
