Ask what performance means
A useful product description should identify the relevant property. Stain resistance, water resistance, fade resistance, and abrasion resistance solve different problems. A fabric designed for strong sunlight is not automatically the easiest choice for food spills, and a stain treatment does not guarantee resistance to pet claws.
Look beyond the treatment
The base construction still matters. Tight, stable weaves tend to catch fewer claws than loose, highly textured surfaces. Fiber content affects touch and cleaning. Color and pattern influence how visible lint, hair, and minor marks appear.
Check the cleaning code
The upholstery cleaning code and the manufacturer’s instructions should guide routine care. “Performance” does not mean every cleaner is safe. Some finishes can be damaged by the wrong solvent, excessive heat, aggressive brushing, or repeated saturation.

When it is worth prioritizing
Performance fabric can be valuable in busy family rooms, homes with pets, dining-adjacent seating, sunny rooms, and households that want a pale sofa without treating it as untouchable. It may matter less in a formal room with limited use.
The best question is not “Is this a performance fabric?” but “Which performance properties does this exact fabric provide, how were they tested, and how must it be maintained?”
